BE A TOURIST IN OUR TOWN, YOUR TOWN: Stroll Washington, Front, Main and Green streets. Be curious and visit the many unique shops along the route. Dine in a cafe or restaurant. Stop by the museum and explore the many decorated rooms of historical decor. Visit Burke Park via boat or car and survey the many bricks below the second-tallest flagpole in America. Picnic in the pavilion and swim at the beach. On Sunday, take in the farmers market. Admire the many American flags flying from the poles on Washington and Front streets thanks to New Baltimore Public Works. Most of all, greet people and welcome them to our fantastic town. The writer enjoys doing this often and finds it to be a smiling endeavor.

MIDWEEK CONCERT SERIES IN BURKE PARK: Wednesdays through Aug. 31 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Our Town is hosting an evening of entertainment in our welcoming Burke Park. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and be prepared for a special family event. On July 27 “Paul and Oats” are on the bill. The Anchor Bay High School Jazz Ensemble will perform on Aug. 10. Ahead, it will be “Momford and Sons” on Aug. 17. Enjoy the view of beautiful Anchor Bay as the sun sets over the water.

CREATIVE MARKET AT THE MEADOWS: Opportunities for crafters and vendors to offer items for purchase will be available beginning July 30 at Little Camille’s By The Green. Located at 4575 County Line, between 28 Mile and 29 Mile roads in Casco Township, the market will occur two times a month through October from noon to 5 p.m. The fee is $11. VELMA CULLEN MACDONALD CONTINUING EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP NEWS: With a deadline of Aug. 1 for submission, the scholarship is available for current and former Anchor Bay High School students and now a registered sophomore in a college or university. IT’S VBS TIME: From Aug. 1 through 5 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Christ, the King Lutheran Church, 29920 23 Mile in Chesterfield Township, will host Vacation Bible School. The theme is “Big Fish Bay; Hooked on God’s Mercy.” VBS is for kids 3 to 13 years old. Bible stories, crafts, music and snacks are a part of the day, under the leadership of Sandra Fearn. AUG. 1-3 VBS NEWS: First Congregational Church at 36223 Alfred, 586-725-0909, and St. John’s Lutheran Church at 51161 Maria, 586-725-6801, will present “God’s Wonder Lab,” a Vacation Bible School program for youngsters age 3 to kids entering sixth grade. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Bible stories, music, crafts and snacks will fill the days. Registration is required by July 28 to receive a free T-shirt. JULY 27: GOPHER BROKE IN MEMPHIS: The local blues band will perform from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Memphis Lions Field on Pratt Road. Next will be the New Haven Music in the Park event on Haven Ridge Road on Aug. 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

IRA TOWNSHIP MUSIC IN THE PARK NEWS: The next show will be on Aug. 5, with “The Dynasty” performing; Sept. 2, will be “The Beach Drive.” The Ira Township Park is located on Short Cut near Meldrum Road in Fair Haven. Dress for the weather and bring lawn chairs. Entertainment in the country is calm and peaceful.

RENT THE IRA PARK: The Ira Township Municipal Park has a pavilion that may be rented on Short Cut near Meldrum in Fair Haven. Reunions, picnics and celebrations of all kinds are welcome to enjoy the country atmosphere at the park. To make a reservation an application must be obtained at the Ira Township office at 7085 Meldrum in Fair Haven, open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The office is closed on Fridays. The fee is $50 for Ira Township residents and $100 for non-residents. The park is available for personal picnics whenever there isn’t a scheduled event.

RELAY FOR LIFE AUG. 11-13 YARD SALE: Items are requested for the sale, which will be on the grounds of Our Town’s city hall. Donated items for the sale may be taken to the following sites in Our Town: 36670 Poplar, 51500 Bedford or 53540 Grace. The NB Lions Relay For Life team will donate all funds to the American Cancer Society for research. On the same weekend, the entire thumb of Michigan will host sales along the shores of Lake Huron on M-25 and M-29.

AUG. 13 AMVETS POST 52 SHOW: Located at 51285 County Line, the post will present the Neil Lawrence Experience, a tribute to Niel Diamond, and on Sept. 10th, the Sons of Amvets Annual Car Show. For details, call 586-725-0865.

AUG. 14-18 GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH VBS: The church’s Vacation Bible School will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Children 3 to 12 years old are invited. Located at 48655 Jefferson in Chesterfield Township, the theme is “Treasure Seekers.” Register at the church’s Facebook site or arrive at 5:30 p.m. the first night to register. AUG. 19-20 MACDONALD PUBLIC LIBRARY FUNDRAISER: Aug. 19 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., a quilting, scrapbooking and crafts fundraiser will take place at the library. Lunch, dinner and snacks included. The cost is $60 a person. Raffle tickets are extra. To reserve a spot or for more information, please call 586-206-1881. AUG. 20 ABHS 1982 CLASS REUNION NEWS: It’s been 40 years since the class graduated from Anchor Bay High. A gathering will take place at Cedar Glen Golf Course, 36860 25 Mile, from 6 p.m. to midnight. ABHS CLASS OF 1972 REUNION NEWS: Anchor Bay High School Class of 1972 50th reunion is being planned for Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. at Little Camille’s By The Green in Casco. OVERNIGHT CASINO TRIP PLANNED: Shirley, 586-531-1934, is taking reservations for a getaway Oct. 11 and 12. The cost is $173 for double occupancy, $256 for single occupancy and a $50 registration fee accepted with the final payment due by Aug. 26. Included is transportation, a room at Four Winds Casino, continental breakfast, movie, small snack, water and driver’s tip. The first stop will be in Battle Creek at Firekeepers Casino and includes $20 game play and $5 food coupon. The next stop will be Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, staying overnight, with $25 game play and $10 food coupon. Traveling back home, the trip will stop at Firekeepers with another $20 in game play and a $5 food coupon.

AUG. 26-27 YARD SALE: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, at 31100 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield Township, invites browsers and purchasers to a unique yard sale taking place Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Household items, outdoor items, clothing, furniture, costumes, jewelry and more will be available. ART ON THE BAY COMING SEPT. 3-4: From the Art on the Bay committee: “Last call for artists and craftspersons! All applications have to be received by Aug. 10. Visit artonthebay.com to apply. The vendor cost is $150 for two days with a $15 application fee. All work submitted must be handcrafted. No kits, molds or models.” The 12th Fine Arts and Crafts Show on Labor Day weekend will be located in Burke Park and is visited by over 8,000 people every year. NBIC REHEARSALS BEGIN SEPT. 12: Beginning at 7 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 36223 Alfred at the corner of Base Street, the New Baltimore Interfaith Choir will begin its 42nd year of entertaining the area. The choir has performed from Detroit to Port Huron at various venues and presented Christmas and Spring concerts yearly. There are no auditions and no fees. Think about this! LIVE MUSIC SEPT. 17 AT LEMPKE-BLACKWELL VFW POST 7573: The Spooky Sterling Band will perform from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. for an outdoor lawn chair event. The cost is $10 a person. SEPT. 24 CHARITY BENEFIT FOR GREAT LAKES BURN CAMP: Drag Queen Bingo will take place at VFW Post 7573 at 35011 23 Mile Road in Our Town. The donation is $30 for three games and the show. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show will be at 7 p.m. Cash bar, food, raffle baskets and 50/50 raffles will be available. Call Dawn Murphy at 586-525-0669 for advance tickets. Early tickets are recommended, as space will be limited.

AB LIONS COLLECTING PLASTIC ITEMS: Until Nov. 1 there will be bins behind Our Town’s city hall and at the Anchor Bay Lions Club on Short Cut Road in Anchorville. The club has a goal of collecting 500 pounds to give to a recycling facility.

ORDER A BRICK: Under our glorious flag at the shore of Anchor Bay in Burke Park is an area that has bricks that are etched with important words of dedication, honor and memoriam. Readers are welcome to order one to be etched and planted beneath the flag at Our Town’s city hall or MacDonald Public Library. Three lines of 14 characters each may be ordered at the cost of $125 per brick. Stroll to Burke Park, beneath the flagpole and read those already in place. It’s a history of Our Town in a way.

BOTTLE AND CAN COLLECTION SATURDAYS: Take empty, clean beverage cans and bottles to Champion Health Club at 33089 23 Mile Road in Chesterfield Township between 10 a.m. and noon. The New Baltimore Lions Club appreciates all who contribute to the collection, funds from which are then given to support the blind and the Leader Dogs for the Blind facility in Rochester.
